Responsible Play
The fireside snug is a small amenity kept for resident guests. We want time spent there to stay light and easy, a quiet end to an evening by the fire, never something that follows you home. This page sets out how we keep it that way and where to turn if play stops feeling like play. Reviewed July 2026.

How we keep it in proportion
The snug is deliberately small. Table stakes are kept modest, the evening host knows the regulars by name, and there is no pressure to sit down or to stay. We do not offer any inducement to play, and there is nothing to sign up for. Games are one of many things the house offers alongside the sauna, the salon table and the dusk elk drive with the gamekeeper, and for most guests they are the least of it.
Setting your own limits
The simplest safeguard is to decide before you go in how much time you want to spend, and to leave when you reach it. Take breaks. Step out to the river air. Play only when you are rested and in a settled frame of mind, never to chase a difficult mood or a loss. If any of that becomes hard to hold to, the kindest thing is to stop for the evening, and our host will always help you do so without fuss.
Signs worth noticing
If play starts to feel less like a pastime, if you find yourself thinking about it away from the table, spending longer than you meant to, or feeling low about it afterward, those are worth taking seriously. Talking to someone helps, and it is a sign of good sense, not weakness.
